Your marine naturalist guide helps you recognize the whales and interpret what happens at the surface. Look for blows, tail flukes, pectoral fins and, when the whales choose, breaches or spyhops. Mothers and calves or groups of competing males can offer very different encounters.
An onboard hydrophone gives us the opportunity to listen beneath the surface when conditions and whale activity allow. Whale song is not heard on every trip, and neither singing nor a particular behavior can be promised.

The local tours on this page run from December to April. Wildlife movement and conditions vary throughout the season. See our whale watching timing guide for more planning information, and check availability for your travel dates.
How long are the trips, and how many guests join?
Local sunrise, classic morning or noon, and sunset Super Salty trips last 2 hours, with a maximum of 12 guests. The private luxury yacht experience is 3 hours for up to 10 guests. The Puerto Chale gray whale adventure is a separate full-day excursion.
Should I choose sunrise, daytime or sunset?
Choose the time that fits your schedule and preferred light: sunrise includes coffee and tea, daytime offers the classic experience, and sunset includes blankets and beverages. Shared and private options are listed above. No time of day guarantees more active whales, calmer water or better sightings.
What is included on the local whale watching tour?
The local tour inclusions include a marine naturalist guide, hydrophone, complimentary Canon Pro tour photos, drinks and snacks. Super Salty has cushioned seating, shade and storage. Review the selected option above for its full inclusions and any departure-specific extras.
Will we hear whale song or see a breach?
Both are possibilities, not promises. The hydrophone can help us listen when conditions and whale activity allow, and your guide explains the behavior you observe. Whales decide when to surface, breach, show their tails or sing; other wildlife sightings also vary.
Can families and children join?
The local booking sections list adult and child pricing, including the allowance for children aged 6 and under. Tell us the ages and number of children when booking. Everyone must meet the boarding and tour requirements; contact us to confirm suitability for your family before reserving. Puerto Chale has separate age and participation rules.
What should I bring, and are there participation restrictions?
Follow the packing and requirements lists above for your selected trip. A camera, sun protection and an extra layer are useful for time on the water. Review the stated pregnancy, back and neck, boarding and seasickness restrictions before booking; contact the team if you need clarification.
Do you pick up from JW Marriott, Cabo Azul, Zadún, El Ganzo or Secrets?
For the local San Jose del Cabo tours, plan to meet at the Salty Cabo marina office; hotel pickup is not listed in those inclusions. Use the hotel guidance above and ask us for directions. The separate Puerto Chale day trip does include hotel pickup.
Can I book the whole boat or a larger yacht?
Yes. The local Super Salty departures have private options for your party, with capacity up to 12. The separate private luxury whale watching option uses a 55ft yacht for up to 10 guests on a 3-hour trip. Contact us about availability.
Is sunset whale watching the same as your Cabo sunset cruise?
No. The seasonal sunset whale tour is a dedicated whale watching outing. Our Cabo sunset cruise is a separate scenic evening experience with its own inclusions.
Are sightings guaranteed, and what if my plans change?
